Dermabrasion

What does it try to accomplish?

Removal or improvement of surface irregularities in the skin such as acne scars, small wrinkles and brown patches and freckles. It can be repeated leaving a few months between treatments.

How is it done?

The skin surface is removed to its deeper layers using a power tool.

How long does the operation take?

Depends on the area treated. For the whole face about ¾ hour.

How long is the stay in the clinic?

1 Night or day case.

What type of stitches are used?

None.

What type of dressing is used?

A clingfilm-like dressing is worn for about five days. Make-up can generally be used a few days later.

Is there any bruising?

Usually slight.

Is there any swelling?

Can be very dramatic, depending on the area treated. Usually goes by about a week.

What pain will there be?

Moderate, about the same as bad sunburn. Small areas are usually painless.

Where are the scars and how bad are they?

Unlikely to produce scars of its own, unless it is done very deeply to try to remove a tattoo, for example.

How long does it take to recover?

For the first few days the treated area seeps, and sometimes a scab forms. During this time the patient looks absolutely frightful. After a few days the scab separates revealing pink, new skin which is flatter than the previous skin. The treated area remains pink for several months but can usually be disguised with foundation make-up with a greenish tone.

When is the final result seen?

Eventually the skin comes back to its normal colour, usually taking 4 months but it can be much longer.

How long does it last?

Likely to have permanent benefit.

Common Complications
Early:

The most common complaint is that some blemishes remain. The result depends on the depth of the dermabrasion. The surgeon will err on the side of caution and not attempt to remove all the skin lesions in one go. Therefore the aim is improvement not a total cure.

It is essential that the dermabraided skin is not exposed to the sun (or a sun-bed) while it is pink because it will not tan properly but will go a blotchy brown discolouration which is permanent. Patients must cover the skin with a total sun-block cream until it is a normal colour. Quite often the blemishes look worse during the recovery stage.

Late: Even when the skin is normal colour it will blush much more than usual in the treated area for up to a year or so in some cases.
